Artist Statement
My work explores the relationship between the human condition and the hunger to be recognized and validated by the silent; non-judgmental character ever present in all of my media – the camera. Documentary storytelling is what moves me and I am inspired by the absurd, the ridiculous and the spectacular image.
I have always been moved by images. They are a brilliant way to tell stories and captivate the imagination of viewers. As a medium it is has the power to both tell the truth while leaving room for the viewer to devise their own story. My art is about the human condition and the perception of humans relative to lives that we live; the things that we feel.
Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated by the endless. And while it might seem that our subject – in front of and well aware of the camera is reacting to the presence of the lens and incapable of carrying on as authentic – I believe that we can learn more by observing reactions to being photographed than we ever could through authentic omniscient observation.

My recent work in film and video represents both documentary (Lincoln: Prelude to the presidency, Kanza Artist – M.T. Ligget), and more commercially viable media intended for the television broadcast market. (House of Cards, The Urban Conversion). Because this is both an art and a business; I have not yet been able to commit myself to a single output. I often produce, direct, edit and act as videographer from start to finish. Each of these projects weaves together unusual and artistic approaches to the documentary genre in order to find ever more effective methods to allow viewers to witness experiences outside of their own lives and circumstances.
I come from the grain belt - states like Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois and Colorado. These are the places that I have spent most of my life and this has had a profound impact on my films and the way that I see the word.
Having grown up in the mid-west I was heavily influenced by things like the railroads, schlitz beer, race tracks, and church basement potlucks.
